I really enjoyed this story The diverse characters and exciting adventure Dawnfall has in store is one I really can t recommend checking out enough I highly recommend this to lovers of interactive games and choose your own adventure novels I was scared my opinion of it would change after my review of the first four chapters on my website , but it never did This book game just kept getting better. I m not usually one to rate books before I read them But this is different 1 It s interactive, and draws you in from the very first sentence 2 It s RoAnna Sylver, an author whose works I m pretty sure I ll always enjoy 3 The first four chapters are available NOW, for FREE So I ve already started it, and I can confirm, it s incredible You play as one of two fantasy races, part of a team of Portal Navigators who get hurt in a storm There are hijinks, adorable friends, feisty Ghost Queen pirates, and, as always with RoAnna Sylver s works, an incredible commitment to diversity of choice, both in the character traits you choose and the NPCs Honestly, I cannot wait to finish this book Game Gook I don t even care, I m hooked. Wow Science fiction and romance Damn, who knew I loved the two mixed together RoAnna writes very distinct characters, I could tell which main character was talking by their utterances and body language Zenith, Averis, Oz, and the Ghost Queen are awesome, complex characters I d love to read about them, especially the Ghost Queen My only issue with the novel was the amount of information barrelled at me, it was a lot to take in I did appreciate the addition of a glossary though, I feel like science fiction novels should do that Dawnfall is not like any other romance game I ve ever played before, on multiple levels. The first and most obvious is the sheer lengths that the author has gone through to make sure that this game is as inclusive as possible It s probably the MOST detailed game I ve ever played in allowing players to pick their own pronouns for a lot of nonbinary players this will be the FIRST TIME this has ever been an option and the exact kind of relationships they re interested in Want some mildly steamy and highly artistic sexual encounters with the crew of the Dawnfall You can do that Like romance but want a fully nonsexual experience You can do that too Just want to grow friendships while playing a portal adventure Also an option And in a bonus, though the PC may be one of two alien species, none of this is treated as alien in any way, no matter your gender choice or orientation, the player is not made to feel Othered by any descriptions. The detailed questions on your exact romantic preference takes the forefront because the focus of the game really and truly is entirely on your bonds with the crew that you find yourself fallen in with, if you don t trust them and hold them at arms length to try and save the world as an individualist or forgive the secrets that have been hidden from you in order to embrace your teamwork, whether you want to romance one, none, or all of them, and whether your loyalties lie with your family and lawful way of life or the pirates you re working with. This narrow focus allows deeper scenes with each character and lets you get to know them as practically living, breathing people Each of them has a full history and relationships with other characters that really help to fill out the world I felt as if my character was stepping into a truly developed history and full world, not just shallow backdrops to play out the story against, which is not easy to do with a text only medium. The writing, of course, is top notch The story goes to great pains to paint vivid pictures of the two alien worlds and even without the aid of images or audio cues I felt that the setting was fully realized and shown in amazing detail. Also unique to this game are the polyamorous options, which are shown in surprising depth and detail Each romance is acknowledged by your other potential romances and can be merged together in unique ways While the pirate queen is the only option to be fully monogamous, there s little reason to not want to try for everyone as they all knit together into a fascinating tapestry and your character can be part of several different very sweet triads and polycules. There are also several possible endings to reach, depending on which relationships you choose to develop and whether you focus on teamwork or on your own goals and I found that my ending felt distinct in a satisfying way The impacts of your character s relationships are what guides the ending and it felt as if all my choices over the course of the game really came together to create the impactful ending. All in all, I highly recommend this game especially for queer or polyam inclined players who might never have played a game that so openly acknowledges and is made for them After years of being on the outside, finally a game lets me in and I, personally, couldn t be happier with it. This was than a book for me, and better than a 3D video game RPG, something rather than both Perhaps it is because I come up from MUDs, text based roleplaying, that this format seemed so natural, comfortable, and right.I don t want to do spoilers, so I ll just say a bunch of words like transcendent, compelling, emotionally stirring, and starving for your attention You won t want to look away, even for your silly little livetweet of the experience and it IS an experience and you WILL form bonds with these characters regardless of the particular relationship status you develop with them over time. When I saw my own pronoun on the page, it was stunning I was seen I don t use a traditional pronoun, so that has never happened in my thirty seven years of reading I am 40 It s an astonishing experience It makes you feel grounded in your person, a truly existing human being As this does with any representation of marginalized identities I ve read other stories with nonbinary characters, before, but never one with my very own pronouns, let alone a character that I myself was playing That was Something Special. The choices you will face as you engage this story are always impactful, and always worth being weighed for the inevitable ripple effect they will have If you are anything like me, you will come to see these characters as real people, with real feelings, and it will matter to you how they take your actions And I have yet to play through another time, with a whole different worldview The experience was intense You will want to read and play through this story many times I promise you it is worth it.
